Sid J.A. Hubbard has spent his career asking what information means when it reaches the system that must use it. In the early internet, that question concerned words on a page. In augmented reality, it concerned the boundary between a person and an intelligent environment. In his present work, it concerns entire scientific, civic, computational, and human systems. The scale changed. The inquiry did not.
The Work Before the Work
Context before content
Hubbard was a founder and chief technology officer of WordNetworks in San Francisco, working at the intersection of language, search, advertising, and contextual relevance. He and Robin Stevens were named as inventors on two U.S. patents assigned to the company. The first selected key phrases by examining the page, peer pages, and outside measures of popularity. The second added behavioral signals from social media and measured whether a phrase was becoming more or less relevant over time.12
These were not merely keyword patents. They addressed a problem that would follow Hubbard into every later field: a thing cannot be interpreted accurately from the thing alone. Relevance is produced by what surrounds it, what it is connected to, and what is changing around it.
In 2009, writing as Sid Gabriel Hubbard, he published Augmented Reality: A Human Interface for Ambient Intelligence in ReadWriteWeb. The article appeared while augmented reality was moving from laboratory vocabulary into public technology culture. Hubbard described himself then as an internet entrepreneur and three-time CTO; he led Android Makers in San Francisco and the Bay Area Augmented Reality Meetup Group and participated in open-source development.3 The article subsequently entered academic bibliographies on augmented reality and language-learning technology.4

The Continuum
Eleven books became one inquiry
In May 2026, Hubbard published the first volume of Causality and Attraction: A Continuum of Steady States.5 What began as a work about human systems continued through climate policy, Antarctica, mathematics, cosmology, causal modelling, cognition, time, computer law, artificial intelligence, and the city. Eleven volumes were not planned as eleven isolated claims. They record one perspective discovering its range.
The series develops the Three Laws of Nested Causality, the Zero Infinity, the Final Frontier, and the ternary enclosure function. Its practical discipline is Nested Causal Modelling: begin with the observed thing, map what encloses it and what it encloses, follow causality across those boundaries, declare where the map's authority ends, and continue until a modifiable structure appears. Volume VI establishes the discipline and places it beside causal inference, hierarchical causal models, systems analysis, and game theory without reducing it to any one of them.6
Hubbard later rebuilt the public NCM book around the way the method is actually learned. The reader does not choose a Level 4 intervention in advance. The levels emerge as the map becomes more complete: entities become relationships, relationships reveal switches, and tested switches disclose interventions. Nested Causal Modelling: Solving Impossible Problems is written for the person who has solved their own problems until reaching one that will not yield to another attempt at the same scale.7
From Books to Instruments
He builds the map after he draws it
The clearest difference between Hubbard's research and a collection of essays is what happens next. The work repeatedly leaves the page and becomes an instrument.
RTLDI Atlas
The Right-to-Life Protection model introduced in Volume I became an open atlas covering all 193 United Nations Member States. Its reproducible pipeline combines V-Dem and World Bank source data, preserves field-level attribution, publishes national profiles and interactive maps, and currently estimates $19.29 trillion in bounded annual capital exclusions under the model.89
NewsBoob and War Maps
NewsBoob is an open international-news tuner built without tracking or inserted internet advertising. War Maps follows the same demand for a wider field by placing conflict events, actors, locations, mortality, and fertility into inspectable geographic, temporal, and network views.1011
The Civic Enclosure
Volume XI applies NCM to the city and relocates homelessness from a category of person to a missing civic function. It derives a public architecture of hygiene, food, clothing, sleep, storage, and security from the original work of cities: sustaining the people inside them.12
The Research Instrument
A billion-token laboratory
Hubbard's 2026 work was developed through unusually long, human-directed collaborations with large language models. He used them as research instruments, editors, programmers, adversarial readers, simulators, and production systems while retaining direction, selection, claims, correction, and publication authority. Volume X, CodeX, documented the collaboration after 630 million tokens; the continuing working record later crossed one billion.13
Scale exposed a failure that became part of the research. As context grew, language models repeatedly replaced unfamiliar ideas with familiar analogues, preserved ordinary meaning while removing consequential novelty, or returned an earlier error after it had already been corrected. Hubbard named this prior capture. His response was not to abandon the machines. It was to build a stronger research enclosure around them: original prompts, canonical files, source-fidelity ledgers, quarantines, simulations, exact comparisons, externalized memory, versioned releases, and explicit publication gates.
That process is itself one of his contributions. It treats AI-assisted authorship neither as automatic authority nor as counterfeit human labor. It makes the human source of direction visible and preserves the record required to discover when the instrument changed the idea it was supposed to help examine.
The Range of the Work
One method, many active fields
Hubbard's publications cross boundaries that institutions usually defend as separate. His physics writing asks whether scale must be addressed before General Relativity and quantum evolution are joined.14 His work on drug safety separates regulatory approval from accumulated human exposure.15 His computer-law volume follows the consequences of placing criminal liability around an unstable idea of authorization. His cognitive volume turns the observer into the observed field. His fiction, including Unreal Again, carries questions of identity, reality, and recursive worlds into narrative.16
The range is the consequence of a method designed to travel between fields. Nested Causal Modelling does not begin by asking which discipline owns a problem. It asks what holds the problem in place, where that structure can be influenced, and what becomes possible when the map is allowed to cross the boundary that made the problem look complete.
The Present Work
Who is Sid Hubbard?
He is a systems builder who became an author because the systems he needed to describe did not yet have a shared language. He is an inventor whose early work measured relevance around a phrase and whose later work measures causality around a problem. He is a technologist who does not stop when the paper is finished, because a model that proposes an intervention should be willing to become one.
The patents, books, papers, software, atlases, games, broadcasts, datasets, corrections, and public repositories are the record. The contribution connecting them is a way of seeing: nothing exists alone, no present scale is final, and an impossible problem may be the visible edge of an unfinished map.
